Double entry diaries (DEDs) are a powerful tool to stimulate complex thinking and explore metacognition. Often used to prompt student responses to literature, DEDs are versatile and easily employed cross-curricularly. Bryan will share some perspectives on how he empowers students to be aware of, and to articulate their thinking, resulting in enhanced engagement with text or topics they are exploring. He will share the layers of thinking and responding that are unfolding with his Grade 6/7 students. He will also introduce you to a highly engaging non-fiction text source (useable across multiple grades) that motivates critical thinking and invites students to question or endorse the validity of what they are reading.
